Library Search Engine: Help Guide

The AHA Siena Library database employs a simple Java-scripted search engine. In order to use the search feature, your browser must be Java enabled. If your current browser is not Java enabled, you can download the latest browsers from either Netscape or Microsoft.

Entering Keywords

You may enter any combination of key words to search for books in the library catalog. Useful terms include authors' surnames, publication title, topic, subject, or type of media (e.g. video).

Please note that the database contains over 450 titles. Searches may take several minutes.

To perform wide searches, enter your keywords with NO commas between them. This returns every book that matches any one of the keywords submitted. To perform a cross-referenced search, PUT commas between keywords. This returns books that only match all of the submitted parameters. You may also use boolean search parameters, and the and/or modifiers.

Example: To search for Dante's Inferno you might enter the key words: dante, inferno, poetry, divine, or comedy. (With commas for cross-reference, without for general search.)

Please note, however, that you should avoid entering extremely general topics such as literature, history, or art. These keywords will return hundreds of titles. To perform such a general search you may view all titles in any one of the general subject-specific categories.

What Information is Returned?

The database contains full bibliographic information for the 450+ titles contained in the AHA Siena library. Each entry (when brought up by the Go Get It! button) displays title, author, publication date, publisher, pagination, number of copies, AHA Siena library call number, ISBN number, US Library of Congress call number, and a brief description. For some books, especially those published in Italy and Great Britain, full bibliographic information is unavailable.

Entries for videos and audio cassettes also contain information on number of minutes, director, language, and format.

More Information?

If you are still unable to find the title you need, consult any one of the library category subject-specific lists. These lists display all titles held a given section.

You may also E-Mail the AHA-Siena staff at any time for further information on holdings, purchasing information, etc.

Technical Details

The search engine uses a Javascripted search protocol. All submitted keywords are matched against a simple flat-text database file. Matches are then linked to specified filenames in which catalog entries are contained. The Javascript allows for relatively fast searches, and easy updating of the database as necessary. Only one significant drawback exists: the database does not search for word matches in each cataloged entry; the list of keywords is the only file consulted during the search. Thus, matches are restricted to keywords chosen by the user and the site manager. To give users greater search ability, the subject-specific lists are provided.
